They crack your bones…
Friday, November 21st, 2008Yup, decided it was finally worthwhile doing something about my neck/shoulder pain, and headed off to Paul Tansey, a chiropractor/physical therapist who comes highly recommended in cycling circles in Dublin.
After taking a bit of history, as to the cause of my trouble, he sat me down and had a bit of a prod at my neck before getting out some ‘thermal imaging’ device, and running it up and down my neck a bit. Upon looking at what appeared on the computer screen, it looked like most of my neck was out of alignment to either the left and right by a huge amount!
What followed was an amount of strange, and not entirely painless moves, where he dug his digits into various parts of my neck, and a bit of a back massage, and I was done for the day.
I have to be honest, and say I’m a little sceptical about the whole thing, but it does seem a little easier now, and I’ve another couple of sessions to go to before I’m back to normal, so watch this space.
Wicklow 200
Thursday, November 20th, 2008This was the event that actually kick started my current obsession with the bike. It was around September last year that I picked up a bike and decided to get in shape, and what better way than in what is possibly the toughest single day challenge in Ireland! I proceeded to tell anybody and everybody that I was going to do it, and if I say so myself, it was a success -I beat all the targets I’d set for myself, and had a good (albeit painful) day in the saddle.
Now my fitness has improved, I’ll be doing more more more events next year, and this is still a tough day out, but is more of a training tool now for La Marmotte, and to a greater extent, L-E-L. Route hasn’t been mapped yet, but I am a little disappointed to see that the Wicklow Gap is out this year, but the Shay Elliott should be a toughie. Am looking forward to it immensely though, as It’s a great day out!

Thursday, November 20th, 2008If you ask anyone who’s interested in cycling to name famous climbs in France, the first ones out of their mouths would most likely include Alpe d’Huez and the Col du Galibier, with the Télégraphe and the Col de la Croix de Fer not far behind. In October, we cycled all of these famous passes individually over 4 days, but come July 4th, I shall be stringing them all together while competing in possibly the daddy of all sportives -the 174km cycling event in and around the French alps. It’s going to be tough (just see the gradient profile below), but a lot of fun!
